Salt Lake City Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are searching for an active shooter at the University of Utah campus in the United States with one death confirmed.

Police named the suspect as Austin Boutain, aged 24. Boutain is “considered armed and dangerous” said a tweet sent out by police at 11:33 pm local time.

Shots were fired at Red Butte Canyon Monday night, according to a post by the university’s official Twitter account. The tweet called for a “shelter in place” at 9:09 pm local time.

An update from the university was sent out just after 10 pm local time describing the suspect possibly driving a green Chevy truck with a Colorado license plate and donning black attire, with “a teardrop and cross tattooed on his face.”

The Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed one death at the University of Utah, saying the suspect was not in custody.

Police scanners indicated that the victim was shot inside of a vehicle near the gate to Red Butte Canyon.

Police found a rifle and sleeping bag on the side of a road near campus, according to police scanners. The Post is attempting to verify the exact location of the confirmed discovery, but it may be Red Butte Canyon Road.

Red Butte Canyon is a protected research and study area with a public botanical garden, arboretum & hiking trails.

The university tweeted a response to a student at 10:42 pm local time confirming the shooter was still at large.

The Daily Utah Chronicle, the student publication for the university, is tweeting the latest details based on police scanners and on-the-scene reporting.

Police communications heard via Broadcastify indicate multiple suspects, this being confirmed first by the Daily Utah Chronicle and by other sources including the Post.

A helicopter and Bearcat, also known as a “Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck” produced by Lenco and used by commonly used by SWAT, is on the scene, as well as armed tactical teams.
