United Nations Command said on Tuesday that North Korean troops violated the Korean Armistice Agreement of 1953 when a soldier crossed the border while pursuing a defector last week.
The United States released dramatic footage of the defector’s escape across the border on Wednesday local time.
North Korean soldiers fired some 40 rounds as the defector fled for the border.
The unnamed North Korean was hospitalized soon after the incident and has endured two rounds of surgery where doctors worked to remove bullets from his body.
He is expected to survive after being shot five times, however, medical staff say he is traumatized from the defection.
Upon awakening in hospital, local media report that the soldier requested to watch and TV and has been shown South Korean movies.
The South, formally known as the Republic of Korea, said the soldier had departed his vehicle after a tire was ruined, ran the rest of the way across the border and was found under a pile of leaves in the village of Panmunjom.
The soldier defected at the tourist area of the Joint Security Area, a rare spot for defections to occur. About 1,000 individuals defect every year, according to reports.
