On Wednesday morning, Time Magazine announced the Silence Breakers as Person of the Year for 2017, the group behind a major social media campaign in support of women who have suffered sexual assault.
The hashtag “#MeToo” trended across social media in October after actress Alyssa Milano tweeted it to three million Twitter followers on Oct. 17.
The magazine featured several sexual harassment victims, that included notable figures like actress Ashley Judd; who was the first women to come out about Hollywood producer Harvey Weistein accusations back in October.
In the span of six weeks, Time had brought the women and men that came from all walks of life to shed light on a story that has been kept away from the media for so long.
The article takes on the stories of these survivors and gives advice to other victims of sexual harassment. The feature also includes a five minute video that lays out the timeline of when #MeToo campaign came into fruition and how it has impacted the media this year.
The “#MeToo” campaign began in October when Milano tweeted out, “If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.”
Following her tweet, several sexual harassment victims began sharing their stories through the hashtag “#MeToo,” giving a platform for victims who have been silenced on their own experiences.
The campaign has brought a new perspective on sexual harassment victims, proving that they are not only women but men, they can either be rich or poor, a celebrity or a housekeeper. Every victim has a story that deserves to be told and brought to justice.
Milano wrote a Twitter chain Wednesday morning that has been described as “powerful” by several on social media.
