The Hamas militant group said on Thursday that the United States recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is tantamount to a war declaration.
Leader Ismail Haniya made clear that the Trump recognition on Dec. 6 was a “war declaration against Palestinians”, and called for a new “Intifada”, translated as an uprising.
“This decision has killed the peace process, has killed the Oslo [accord], has killed the settlement process,” Haniya pronounced.
“The U.S. decision is an aggression, a declaration of war on us, on the best Muslim and Christian shrines in the heart of Palestine, Jerusalem.”
Palestine has long considered the entirety of Jerusalem as the capital of a future state, something Haniya reiterated.
He said that “we are here today at a critical point in the history of the Palestinian issue”, with the core of the issue being Jerusalem, calling Trump’s decision “provocative and “unfair”, according to Al Jazeera news agency.
The militant leader called on all Palestinian factions to unite with swiftness to create a “strategy to confront the occupation” and U.S. administration policies in Palestinian territory.
Mustafa Barghouti, a top official with the Palestinian national advocacy group, told Al Jazeera that Trump was “joining Israel in the war crimes and in confirming the annexation of the occupied Palestinian Territories”.
