Italy declared a state-of-emergency for its energy sector on Tuesday following a large explosion at a natural gas hub in Austria.

At around 8:45 a.m., a blast rocked the Baumgarten compound due to what police called a “technical fault”, killing one and injuring 18.

The site is a major hub for imported Russian gas, acting as a throughway for the fuel to reach other European countries.

Italy’s Minister for Economic Development Carlo Calenda declared an emergency for energy supplies as gas prices are increasing across Europe.
