A video including a University of Guelph student has gone viral on Twitter, garnering 143,000 views, 4,000 retweets and 15,000 likes for standing up to her professor who was ridiculing a special needs student.
The video has since been deleted, with the University of Guelph putting out a statement on the issue.
The professor made crude comments to a student with severe anxiety. The professor said that the student’s aid “needed to control” the student and called him “annoying” when he would join in on class discussions.
The student was playing with gum, and the professor told the student to stop, the student told the professor about his anxiety, which is why he was playing with his gum, but the professor ignored him.
Courtney Orser, the student depicted in the video stood up and told the professor about his treatment towards the student, before walking out of class. The lecture room roared with applause and many students followed suit, and left the lecture.
The professor has been put on leave since the incident.
