An Amtrak chartered train carrying Republican Party lawmakers to an annual retreat in Virginia struck a truck killing one and seriously injuring another on Wednesday morning in the United States.
No Republican politicians or aides were harmed beyond minor injuries, but Arizona Senator Jeff Flake told CNN one individual in the truck was killed by the impact.
The crash occurred at 11:20 a.m. near Crozet in Virginia, some 180 kilometers southwest of the Capitol.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said that U.S. President Donald Trump was “fully briefed on the situation in Virginia and is receiving regular updates.”
“There is one confirmed fatality and one serious injury,” Sanders said.
“There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff.”
The press secretary said that the administration is in contact with Amtrack, state and local authorities.
Michigan Rep. Bill Huizenga said that passengers had gathered outside the train to pray for those harmed and emergency response teams.
Mr. Trump is due to attend the retreat on Thursday.
