A Russian Sukhoi-25 warplane was shot down and its pilot killed on Saturday over rebel-held territory in Syria’s northwest province of Idlib.

The Defense Ministry of Russia said that the pilot had ejected into an area that it reportedly under the hardline Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, al-Quada.

The pilot made it to the ground alive, but was killed during a firefight.

The Russian fighter plane was supporting a Syrian government offensive on the rebel group.

The Russian military reportedly fired cruise missiles into Syria from the Mediterranean Sea in response.
