All five passengers were killed as a result of a helicopter slamming into New York’s East River on Sunday, with only the pilot surviving the crash, according to authorities in the economic capital of the United States.
Three of the passengers who survived the initial incident were taken to hospital in critical condition but the New York City Fire Department said early on Monday that they had succumbed to their injuries.
The pilot for the Liberty Helicopters chopper was able to free himself from safety straps, was rescued and taken to hospital for conversation, the fire department reported earlier.
“One of the most difficult parts of the rescue were that five people were tightly harnessed,” fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told gathered reporters on Sunday evening, saying that “people had to be cut out.”
In an audio recording of the mayday call to LaGaurdia Airport, the pilot says that the helicopter was experiencing an engine failure.
The aircraft was chartered for a private photo shoot, U.S. authorities said.
