United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday his new national security strategy recognizes space as a theatre of war and mused about creating a new wing of the military that would operate outside of Earth’s atmosphere.
“Space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea,” Mr. Trump told service members at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California.
“We may even have a space torce, develop another one, space force. We have the Air Force, we’ll have the space force.”
The president said he had initially coined the term “space force” as a joke, but then soon realized it was “a great idea”.
Trump asked those in attendance to think about the idea of an out-of-atmosphere military force “because we are spending a lot and we have a lot of private money coming in, tremendous.”
You saw what happened the other day, and tremendous success,” the president continued, likely referring to the successful rocket launches of Elon Musk’s innovative SpaceX commercial space company.
“From the very beginning, many of our astronauts have been soldiers and air men, coast guard men and marines. And our service members will be vital to ensuring America continues to lead the way into the stars.”
It was unclear whether the president was still joking by the time he finished the off script remarks about a so-called “space force” at the air base in San Diego.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment from U.S. media.
