An Uber Canada spokesperson confirms that the company has paused its testing of self-driving tests in the United States and Toronto after a person is killed Sunday night in Tempe, Arizona.
The New York Times reported that a woman was crossing an intersection in Tempe, Arizona when she was hit by the self-driving Uber. There was a human operator behind the wheel at the time of the incident. This is the first reported death caused by a self-driving car.
Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi has tweeted condolences to the victim’s family.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation said it is reviewing the incident.
