The Emerge Media Awards was a night to celebrate many sides of the field on Thursday evening, with students with all angles winning awards for their work.

The dinner and awards ceremony, like the conference that took place just hours before it, was planned with and carried out by fourth year University of Guelph-Humber students.

A team of media students from University of British Columbia won the design competition for Online News Site/Magazine, while the acclaimed University of Toronto’s The Varsity student publication won for Print/Cover.

Guelph-Humber took first runner-up for the online award behind B.C. for their Emerge Magazine of last year, as submissions can only be from 2017.

GH’s Warren Schlote, who is also the editor in-chief of the online Emerge Magazine for 2018, won runner up to the University of King’s College for the Audio Storytelling category for his piece: “A Different Side to New York: Parlor Jazz”.

Sara Martins of GH took second place in Photography behind Cody Bonner of Mohawk College for her work on “Seconds”.

GH took another podium win with Aastha Shetty’s “Naked: Disrobing a Modelling Scam” coming in second for the Multimedia Production award, behind the students of Mount Royal University who made “Closing Midfield”.

Other award winners spanned several universities across Canada:

  • Written Word: Josie Kao of U of T won for her “Data in a Foreign Land”
  • Videography: University of Regina students for an investigation into oil money and influence in Saskatchewan
  • Public Relations: Jason Lau of McMaster University for “Canada is the World”

The atmosphere

The Assembly Hall at the Humber Lakeshore campus was filled with excitement and anxiety for both contestants and audience members.

The award ceremony tipped off with host Julian Klimczyk welcoming attendees with a dinner. “Over 200+ students submitted their pieces for tonight’s award ceremony,” says Klimcyzk as he congratulates the final nominees.

Media Studies program head, Jerry Chomyn was the first keynote speaker to start off the evening.

“We said what if we had a competition,” said Chomyn as he reflected on the origins story of Emerge. “I think we need to celebrate media content creation.”

Following the dinner, Canadian singer-songwriter and author Dave Bidini spoke on his experience with writing, specifically with his community newspaper The West End Phoenix.

As the awards commenced, the sound level of applause indicated the entourage sized support each nominee had. Recipients included students from the University of Regina all the way to the University of British Columbia.
