Ontario Liberals plan to make full-day daycare free of charge for parents of preschool-age children, CBC reports.
The program is set to launch in 2020 and will cost taxpayers an estimated $930 million.
The policy was largely influenced by Gordon Cleveland, an economist at University of Toronto. Cleveland claims that daycare currently costs the average Ontario family as much as $22,000 per year, calling it a “punishing financial burden”.
Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne announced the program earlier today in a Toronto public-school, saying it will save the average one-child household an average of $17,000 per year.
