The data of 87 million people may have been improperly shared with political advertising firm Cambridge Analytica, Facebook said on Wednesday.

Nearly 82 per cent of the estimated users affected by the data sharing are located in the United States.

The social media giant also cited some 622,161 Canadian accounts as potential users hooked by the British Cambridge measuresAnalytica firm, which has ties to the presidential campaign of U.S. President Donald Trump.

“In total, we believe the Facebook information of up to 87 million people ā€” mostly in the US ā€” may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica,” Facebook said, buried in a statement on improved security.

This is a significant increase from the some 50 million previously reported affected by Facebook.
