The United States imposed sanctions on seven wealthy Russians and 17 senior government officials on Friday in response to alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and actions taken by Moscow in Crimea, Ukraine and Syria.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the levies aimed to target those profiting from the Kremlin’s “corrupt system” and those that “benefit from the Putin regime”, accusing Russia of “malicious” cyber activities.
Twelve companies owned by the oligarchs, the state arms exporter and a bank are also sanctioned by Washington, Mr. Mnuchin said in a statement released by the Department of the Treasury.
It is the most aggressive action taken by the Trump administration thus far against Moscow, analysts say, following previous sanctions on 19 Russians for the cyber and election interference charges in March.
