Michael Cohen, the personal lawyer and fixer for United States President Donald Trump, is under criminal investigation, a court filing revealed on Friday.
U.S. Department of Justice prosecutors say the probe has been underway for several months and focuses on Cohen’s personal business dealings.
The federal filing cane in response to Cohen’s attempt to stop prosecutors from reviewing the documents seized when the Federal Bureau of Investigation raised his resident and office on Monday.
The court filing did not go into detail on what Cohen is under investigation for, however, the document reveals the first details release by the Justice Department on the searches.
Search warrants utilized earlier allowed federal prosecutors in New York to to search multiple email accounts, where they found Cohen had carried out “little to no legal work, and that zero emails were exchanged with President Trump”.
Cohen has claimed a “significant amount” of attorney-client privilege, according to U.S. media, but prosecutors said that the seized information would not fall under the claim, saying that at least one witness said Cohen’s only client was the president.
