United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Friday that the Cold War between the United States and the Russian Federation has returned, issuing a warning over the dangers of escalation in Syria.
Mr. Guterres gave the warning during the opening of a tense UN Security Council meeting, saying that “the Cold War is back is vengeance, but with a difference.”
“The mechanisms and the safeguards to manage the risks of escalation that existed in the past no longer seem to be present,” the UN chief said, urging countries to “act responsibly in these dangerous circumstances”.
The U.S. and allies France and the United Kingdom are considering whether to launch missile strikes against the Syrian government following a purported chemical weapons attack on April 7, an action Russia says would risk starting a war.
The Russian envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, accused the U.S. of using the suspected chemical attack as a pretext to overthrow the Assad government and “contain” Russia.
