Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey called the president of the United States “morally unfit to be president” during an exclusive interview aired by ABC News, after Donald Trump attacked him ahead of his book release.

Mr. Comey told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos also said there is “certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice” when Trump asked him last year at the White House to if he could see his way to “letting Flynn go,” referring to a criminal probe of fired National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

“If he didn’t know he was doing something improper, why did he kick out the attorney general and the vice president of the United States and the leaders of the intelligence community?” Comey asked, referring to Trump’s actions before he asked about Flynn’s case.

“I mean, why am I alone if he’s– doesn’t know the nature of the request?”

Mr. Trump posted another angered Twitter rant against former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey on Sunday before an interview over a memoir on his time serving the president.

Mr. Comey is set to release a book detailing the U.S. president’s “mob boss” style of leadership and describing “the forest fire that is the Trump presidency”, reported U.S. media.

Various clips have already been released, including one where he says his belief that Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 United States presidential election was “a factor” in the way he handled the probe into her use of a private email server.

Mr. Trump picked up on this clip and called the former director a “slimeball”.

Comey appeared to fire back, tweeting that his book is “about ethical leadership” where he examines three presidents: “[two] help illustrate the values at the heart of ethical leadership; [one] serves as a counterpoint”.

“I hope folks read the whole thing and find it useful.”

Trump fired Comey from his top slot at the FBI last May and in its aftermath it emerged that the former director had kept detailed notes on his conversations with the president that may have detailed obstruction over the Michael Flynn probe.

After reports of the Comey memos emerged, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein hired former FBI chief Robert Mueller to lead the special counsel investigation into alleged Russian election meddling and possible collusion.

The ABC News interview featuring Comey will be aired on Sunday, kicking off the book tour for A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies & Leadership, already a bestseller on Amazon.

The Republican National Committee funded a website called ‘Lyon’ Comey’ that attempts to attack his credibility ahead of the book release.

@realDonaldTrump

Unbelievably, James Comey states that Polls, where Crooked Hillary was leading, were a factor in the handling (stupidly) of the Clinton Email probe. In other words, he was making decisions based on the fact that he thought she was going to win, and he wanted a job. Slimeball!

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

The big questions in Comey’s badly reviewed book aren’t answered like, how come he gave up Classified Information (jail), why did he lie to Congress (jail), why did the DNC refuse to give Server to the FBI (why didn’t they TAKE it), why the phony memos, McCabe’s $700,000 & more?

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

Comey throws AG Lynch “under the bus!” Why can’t we all find out what happened on the tarmac in the back of the plane with Wild Bill and Lynch? Was she promised a Supreme Court seat, or AG, in order to lay off Hillary. No golf and grandkids talk (give us all a break)!

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

I never asked Comey for Personal Loyalty. I hardly even knew this guy. Just another of his many lies. His “memos” are self serving and FAKE!

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

Slippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!
