Tuesday, President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for an early election that will take place on June 24th of this year.
Erdogan made the announcement in a speech broadcasted on Turkish television:
Although its seems like no serious issues emerge as the president and the government are working in harmony, the illnesses of the old system can counter us at every step.
But with the cross-border operations we maintain in Syria, and also historical events happening in the area centered around Syria and Iraq, it became a must for Turkey to climb over the uncertainty as soon as possible, or our country to make decisions about the future more strongly and apply them, passing to the new governmental system becomes urgent.
While the elections are for both president and parliament, the winning presidential candidate will get extraordinary powers following a referendum passed by Erdogan’s government one year ago.
Elections were originally going to be held on November 3, 2019.
