India’s government introduced new legislation on Saturday that will prescribe the death penalty as punishment for child rapists.
The death penalty will be given to anyone convicted of raping a child younger than 12, the Press Trust of India reported.
The ordinance will also make punishments harsher for individuals convicted of raping a child 12 to 16 years old.
India’s decision comes shortly after eight men were convicted of raping and killing an eight-year-old girl in Jammu-Kashmir state. Two of the men were police officers, and all eight are currently on trial for rape, assault, and murder.
The legislation has been approved by the Union Cabinet but still needs approval from parliament and India’s president to formally become law.
