Toronto FC continue to fight for a playoff spot after defeating the Montreal Impact.
The Reds hosted the Impact on Saturday night at busy Exhibition Place due to the CNE. Montreal, currently occupying 6th spot in the Eastern Conference, had a 9 point gap between them and TFC. Manager Greg Vanney changed up the starting 11 from last week’s draw against San Jose. Midfield maestro Victor Vazquez started while Chris Mavinga and Auro were not in the 18 due to injury. Jozy Altidore also missed out as he was serving his second game of a two match suspension. New signing Lucas Janson who scored last week in San Jose, started in place of Altidore. MLS veteran Drew Moor started his first game since suffering an injury in April.
All four goals in the game were scored in what was a very eventful first half. Sebastian Giovinco scored a brace, first chipping Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush, in the 6th minute. Giovinco beat Bush short side in the 22nd minute when Jonathan Osorio held up the ball well on the edge of the 6 yard box before setting up the Italian for his second. Osorio scored a goal of his own when he chipped Bush in the 28th minute. Montreal pulled one back just a minute and a half later through Alejandro Silva to make it 3-1.
Montreal had chances throughout the second half to pull the game back, with the best opportunity to pull things within one in the 92nd minute when Drew Moor headed a shot off the line to preserve the two goal lead, which gave him and his team three important points. Toronto FC came away with the crucial three points. Their next game is on Saturday when they host MLS new boys Los Angeles FC who are impressing many in their debut season. TFC will gladly welcome Jozy Altidore back into the starting lineup and anyone else who is currently out, because they need to find form and fast if they want to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
