The Ottawa Senators traded defenceman Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday afternoon.

Karlsson, 28, was drafted by Ottawa in 2008 and played 627 total games with the club. He made 5 All-Star appearances and won the Norris Trophy in 2012 and 2015. Karlsson was named club captain on October 2, 2014 and led all defencemen in the league in points, he also scored a career-high in goals that season with 21. For a defenceman he has a potent attacking presence, as he averaged 54.4 assists in his last 5 seasons.

The Senators acquired Chris Tierney, Dylan DeMelo, Josh Norris, Rūdolfs Balcers, and multiple draft picks within the coming years in return for sending Karlsson to San Jose.
