Toronto FC kept their slim playoff hopes alive on Saturday when they defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Reds welcomed world-class striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the Galaxy on Saturday night in what turned out to be a sellout crowd. TFC came out firing early on as Victor Vazquez headed home a cross from Gregory van der Wiel in the fifth minute. A sense of over-playing looked like a Toronto chance was over in the 16th minute, but Jonathan Osorio intercepted defender Ashley Cole’s clearance to play it through to Jozy Altidore, as the striker placed a hard and low shot into the far corner. TFC was not done there, Sebastian Giovinco added a third in the 36th minute. Giovinco intended to play a pass into Altidore, who got tripped up with an LA defender, Giovinco followed his own pass and finished his chance with the outside of his boot.
An important milestone was on the cards for Ibrahimovic, who was looking to score his 500th career goal. Ibra has scored many outrageous goals throughout the years, and the one he scored against Toronto in the 43rd minute was no different. Midfielder Jonathan dos Santos sent a ball over the TFC defence and through to Ibrahimovic who scored as he finished with the side of his foot while turning.
Only Zlatan Ibrahimovic could score a milestone goal like that. That goal changed the feel of the game going into the second half, as Los Angeles would complete the comeback. Ola Kamara pulled LA within one in the 54th minute. Then Defender Rolf Feltscher scored his first goal for the Galaxy in the 58th minute which tied the game at 3-3.
Jonathan Osorio scored the go-ahead goal with a header off a cross from Marky Delgado in the 75th minute. TFC put the nail in the coffin to make it 5-3 in stoppage time as Jay Chapman put away a rebound.
This win put the Reds on 30 points for the season from 28 games played. They have two games this week, the first coming on Wednesday against Tigres UANL in the first ever Campeones Cup. TFC then travels to New York to play the Red Bulls on Saturday night in what will be another important game if they want to make the playoffs.
