The Toronto Raptors held media day on Monday morning at Scotiabank Arena ahead of their pre-season.
Fresh faces were aplenty at this year’s media day, in terms of staff and players. Nick Nurse was named head coach in June after Toronto fired Dwane Casey. Nurse joined Casey’s bench staff as an assistant coach in 2013. For the first time since being drafted, DeMar DeRozan took part in media day with his new team, the San Antonio Spurs. The first Q&A session that took place was with new singings Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, who were joined by president Masai Ujiri. There was speculation around Leonard and if he will stay with the Raptors past the 2018-19 season, which he was asked multiple times. Leonard continued to state that he is here to play basketball and is happy to play no matter where he is. Some questions were directed to both Green and Leonard, with Danny Green answering most of them. Kawhi Leonard is not one who speaks or smiles much, but the media got a glimpse of his funny side with the first question he answered.
Kyle Lowry was next up and took questions from media, who was asked numerous times about how he felt about the trade and how his friendship is with DeRozan, which he said has not changed. “My best friend, our relationship is bigger than basketball,” said Lowry. Lowry continues to remain focused on what lies ahead in his career, his ultimate goal is to win the NBA championship.
No matter who the Raptors release or bring in, the motive and the goal remains the same. The team wants to end the season on top, winning a championship. Once media day concluded, the team flew out to Vancouver in the afternoon, where they will begin training camp and pre-season. Their first pre-season game takes place on Saturday evening against the Portland Trail Blazers. Their final pre-season game is on October 11th, with their first game of the season just under a week later. Toronto opens their season at home on October 17th against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
