The office of the U.S. special counsel served a court filing on Tuesday saying former national security advisor Michael Flynn gave “substantial assistance” to the Russia probe and should not receive jail time.

The memo given by prosecutors says “the defendant deserves credit for accepting responsibility in a timely fashion and substantially assisting the government”, the court filing reads.

Flynn’s cooperation will likely anger U.S. President Donald Trump, who is “Individual 1” in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling and alleged collusion in 2016 United States presidential election.

The filing, that reveals that Flynn sat for 19 interviews with Mueller’s team and the Justice Department, follows a guilty plea by Trump fixer Michael Cohen last week over lying to Congress about a Russian Trump tower.

“Given the defendant’s substantial assistance and other considerations setforth below, a sentence at the low end of the guideline range–including a sentence that does notimpose a term of incarceration–is appropriate and warranted,” the filing reads.

The office says Flynn was helpful “on a range of issues, including interactions between individuals in the Presidential Transition Team and Russia.”

But a lot of the details describing how he exactly helped the probe is redacted from public view for now.

Mr. Trump’s attorney Rudolph Giuliani told Fox News later on Tuesday night that Flynn had admitted to offences comparable to “spitting on the sidewalk”.

Giuliani denied that anything in the memo suggested collusion between Trump and Russian officials.
