The Toronto Police are involved in an investigation to find out who was behind anti-Muslim “hate messages” that were scrawled on a poster outside the multi-faith prayer room at Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus.

The posters were discovered with 24 hours of racism elimination day last week by a student who reported it to the Public Safety Department on campus who passed it on to local police, who filed a mischief report.

Police are examining CCTV footage of the incident in search of the offender, however, no suspect has yet been found and there were no witnesses.

Campus security removed the “hate” crime poster immediately, the public safety director, Rob Kilfoyle, told Skedline, saying that “nobody wants to see this stuff” and offensive actions are “not something that is acceptable in our campus culture”.

The student that came across the poster and reported it, Fariha Shahid, posted on Twitter that she was headed to attend prayer when she saw the poster “staring bodly at me”, adding that it was “full of so much hate”.

The poster was defaced just five days after Australian Brenton Tarrant attacked two mosques in New Zealand’s Christchurch with several guns, resulting in the deaths of at least 50 individuals and the wounding of over 20.

Tarrant opened fire right when it was prayer time.

Muhammed contest

The poster was advertising a contest called “who is Prophet Muhammed?”, referring to the founder of Islam. The word “prophet” was crossed out and scrawled beside it in red marker were the words “a rapist and pedophile”.

The theme of the contest was “compassion of the Prophet Muhammed”, however, the vandal put a strikethrough on “compassion” and again “prophet” and wrote above it “barbarism”.

There are no historical account of the Prophet committing rape or torturing people and was known for freeing slaves, according to fact-checking organization Snopes.

The historical knowledge of the religious figure also does not define a man who indulges in barbarism, defined as the absence of culture and civilization.
