Warner Bros. officially announces ‘Funko’ movie

Warner Bros. has officially announced the long-rumoured movie based off the popular collector items, Funko Pops!

A movie based on the big-headed Funko figures was rumoured to be in-development at Warner Bros. for the last 7 months, but today, the studio behind The Lego Movie has finally come out and confirmed it’s active development.

In an interview with Deadline, Funko CEO Brian Mariotti said “We’re thrilled for this opportunity and are committed to make an amazing Funko movie that stands on its own merit. This isn’t about selling toys or building a brand. The team at Warner Animation Group have a unique vision of what the first film should be and we are extremely excited to take this journey alongside them.”

The plot of the film is unknown at this time, but it will be interesting to see what direction it goes in. While Funko has covered a wide range of franchises, I don’t see Warner Bros. getting access to the Marvel, Star Wars or Disney lineups for the film unless a deal is reached with Disney themselves.

Properties already owned by Warner Bros. like the DC Universe (Batman, Superman and so on) and Harry Potter franchises can be expected to appear, and they would be crazy not to capitalize on using characters like Batman (perhaps even bringing Will Arnett back to voice him)

The Funko movie does not yet have a release date or any creative teams attached.
